About this fund

Secure exposure to blockchain technology

Overview

This fund gives investors access to the companies leading the way in blockchain and crypto technology through a regulated investment fund. Rather than purchasing cryptocurrency through an exchange, and needing to handle storage and security, investors can access this innovative new technology through a regulated, exchange-traded investment.

This fund passively tracks the CoinShares Global Blockchain Index, providing investors access to leading companies involved in blockchain payment systems, financial services, energy, mining and tokens.

Sector exposure

This fund is exposed to one thematic sector — blockchain and crypto technology. The CoinShares Global Blockchain Index weights each company in the index based on how deeply it’s involved in blockchain, based on factors like revenue, development stage, and competitiveness.

These scores range from 1 (early potential) to 5 (core players). A company’s index weight is based on its score and adjusted for how easily its shares can be traded (its liquidity).

Thematic

This is primarily a thematic fund, as it targets a specific investment theme. It does track an index, making it a passively managed fund, but its index is rule-based, rather than tracking a specific section of the market (like the S&P 500).

Thematic investments don’t tend to give broad market exposure on their own, so should form part of a diverse portfolio.

Blockchain & Crypto FAQ's

Does this ETF pay dividends?

No. This is an accumulating fund, meaning any returns generated are automatically reinvested for you. This reinvestment type may suit investors seeking long-term growth on their investment.

Does this ETF invest in crypto?

Not directly — this is an investment of companies involved with the development of the blockchain and cryptocurrency ecosystem, rather than a direct investment into the currencies themselves. ETFs that track the spot price of cryptocurrencies are not currently available in the UK.

Is this ETF as risky as crypto?

All investments carry risk, and thematic investments are often associated with a higher level of volatility. However, investing in this ETF offers exposure to the broader blockchain ecosystem through regulated companies, avoiding the extreme volatility, custody risks, and regulatory uncertainty of holding crypto assets yourself.

Can I use the Blockchain & Crypto ETF as a sole investment?

Technically, you can use the Blockchain & Crypto ETF as a sole investment, but due to its thematic nature, it can come with more frequent volatility. Investors seeking a more balanced risk exposure could add this to a broad portfolio featuring a range of investments.
